| TUNIS, TUNISIA | Join your guide and drive to the bustling Medina, the heart of the city. Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the busy market. Next, re-board your coach and travel to the impressive ruins of Carthage. Founded by the Phoenicians, it was from this very powerful North African city that Hannibal began his famous journey. Explore the extensive remains, the Baths of Antonius Pius, and the amphitheater. Drive to Byrsa hill for panoramic views of Tunisia and visit the Museum of Carthage. |
| VALLETTA, MALTA | Depart quayside and travel through various typical Maltese villages towards the south side of the island where you will reach your destination, the Blue Grotto. Begin with taking in the views of the impressive natural rock structures of Wied iz Zurrieq. Time for photos is given. Proceed down the hill towards the departure point to begin your boat trip to the impressive caves and lovely colorful coral formation under the clear blue sea. After the boat trip, time at leisure is provided before proceeding by coach to the quaint Marsaxlokk fishing village where you will have free time for photos, shopping and browsing around the busy market place. You will find many photos opportunities of the lovely and colorful Maltese fishing boats. |
| SICILY, ITALY | You'll depart from the pier on a scenic 2 hour ride to Europe's largest active volcano. While en route, you'll enjoy the delightful countryside of vineyards and orchards. You'll travel a winding road up the slopes past large lava fields as you make your way to the Silvestri Spent Craters, almost 6,000 feet above sea level. There you will be able to walk along the rim of these craters. From the comfort of your coach, you will see remnants of past eruptions. You will motor along the road cutting among streams of petrified lava which flowed like a river from the top of the mountain. More than 130 eruptions have been recorded since the 4th century BC. The most recent one occurred in 2012. Your descent will offer inspiring views of volcanic cones and streams of hardened lava. Although the best views of the actual peak of Mt. Etna are from the distance of many miles, a closer inspection of its powerful destructive capability cannot help but impress any visitor. Afterwards, a cannoli tasting will be offered at a local restaurant. On the way back to the ship, you will stop at the historic and famous GIVAL jewelry factory, where you can admire the craftsmen at work and see how they create their unique pieces in gold, with corals of the Mediterranean and the lava of Etna. Typical Sicilian refreshments will be offered in their beautiful Gival's Villa. You will also learn how some are made with Sicilian amber and shells with lava from Mt Etna and, while enjoying a generous refreshment, you will have an option to purchase a piece from among their beautiful collection. Time permetting, before returning to Messina you'll stop along the seaside for a spectacular view of the town of Taormina and the bay. |
| NAPLES, ITALY | Leaving the port on foot, your first destination will be the 13th century Castle Nuovo. The fortress served as the residence of the kings of Anjou, Aragon and the Spanish Viceroys. You'll soon arrive in Piazza Plebiscito. This noble piazza is undoubtedly the most famous square in Naples. It is flanked by the 17th century Royal Palace, San Carlo Opera House and the Church of St. Francis. Here you'll have some free time for taking in the views. Your walk will continue to the Bourbon Tunnel. Built on the orders of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon, the tunnels were originally designed to give soldiers swift access to the Royal Palace in order to protect the king. Over the years the tunnels were used for a variety of reasons including bomb shelters during World War II. The tunnels have been renovated and are now open to the public. At the end of the walk through the Bourbon Tunnel, you'll arrive at Naples' seaside. Here you'll see the famous Castle of the Egg in Santa Lucia. With its spectacular waterfront views, it offers a perfect photo opportunity. |
